Adjusting My Habits During My Freshman Year of College Athletics

I adjusted my habits but it was a struggle.  Practices were tough and I always had to be on point.  If we didn’t make a time during a sprint or if we missed a shot in a certain drill, we had to start it all over again.  Being in shape was the most important part, and I had come to college not ready for it.  I knew practices would be difficult but I didn’t think they’d be this difficult.  From movies and TV, I saw college as a place with wild parties, girls, and an easy lifestyle.  Being an athlete, it was the complete opposite.

This was my first time away from home and that didn’t make the situation any easier.  When I looked at my roommate Phil, it seemed everything was easy for him.  He played well in practices and the sting of being away from home didn’t seem to hit him as hard.

I brought a Philadelphia Eagles calendar and, week by week, I marked off the days as they passed.  This gave me visual confirmation that even though it was hard, I was making progress and getting through it.  Once I got out of October, I reached November.  After November, it was only a few weeks until I’d be able to go home for Christmas.
