The Burnout I Experienced From High School Basketball As the school year wound down, I took some time off from basketball. For four years, I had constantly been going hard, looking forward to the next tournament or camp. Since I was finished with high school I wouldn’t be playing any AAU anymore, only getting ready for college in the fall.
Looking back, the vision walking up the stairs when I first entered the house in Medford came true. I became one of the best players at Shawnee and the first to receive a Division 1 scholarship in over a decade. I realized that all the work I put in and all the sacrifices I made paid off. When school ended, physically I was recovered but mentally I still had a ways to go. At the Blue Barn, I’d replay the lyrics from Eminem’s song “Renegade” in my mind over and over, “Do you have any clue of what I had to do to get here? I don’t think you do…” Since I needed to rest, my routine was terrible. I’d stay up until about 2 AM every night then sleep in until noon or 2 PM some days. All I wanted was rest and didn’t even want to think about training for Maine. Slowly though, I eased myself back into training, but it wasn’t to the extent of past summers. Even my parents didn’t push me since they knew I was still recovering from the long season. This sums up the Burnout I Experienced From High School Basketball |
